World Cairn Terrier Symposium 2008
My name is Mette Toft, and I am representing the Danish Cairn terriers. It is realy an honor for me to be here to day, and I have been looking so much forward to come and meet you all.
Well – where shall I begin? I can tell you that In 1924 the first Cairn terrier was registered in The Danish Kennel Club, and during the many years the breed has grown in popularity in our country. To day there are about 60 Cairn Terrier breeders registered in the Danish Kennel Club, and The Danish Terrier Club counts quite 600 Cairn Terrier owners among their members.
Within the last 15 years about 500 Cairn Terrier puppies has been registered in the Danish Kennel Club every year, and knowing, that the average age of the breed is 10 to 12 years we must believe, that there are at least 5.000 Cairn Terriers in the Danish Kennel Club right now.
Now - We do not have a special Club for Cairn terrier owners in Denmark, as you have here in Sweden. This Swedish Cairn Club with their dedicated chairman Mats Lindborg and the members of their committees who have done a marvelous job in order to make it possible for us all to meet here at this symposium to day.
Come on everybody let’s give them an applaus.
Well - In Denmark we have no cairn club, we are members of the Danish Terrier Club, which is one of the largest clubs for special breeds connected to the Danish Kennel Club.
In the Terrier Club the Cairn terrier owners are known as the cairn group, and as head of the group we have an elected breed representative who at present is yours truly, and we have a number of dedicated members in two activity groups - one in the west and one in the east part of Denmark - offering activities and services to Cairn Terrier owners .
In the year 2002 a group of volunteers in the Cairn Group decided to establish a health committee. The goal of the committee is to work for and contribute to maintain the health condition of the cairn terriers which are registered in The Danish Kennel Club.
In 2007 the Health Committee decided to accomplished a survey regarding the state of health in the Danish Cairn Terrier population.
A questionarie was sent to all Cairn terrier members of the Danish Terrier Club with various questions regarding the health of their dogs during the years, and The Health Committee received 512 replies from which it appeared, that about 90 per cent of the dogs did not suffer of any illness. Some reported minor infections in ears, eyes and stomach as well as flees and intestinal worms. Some dogs of older age - 10 years and over- was reported as suffering from Cataract, but this however was only 1 percent. Also few older males was reported as suffering from Prostate gland again about 1 per cent only.
And further, what we all believed and actually expected was confirmed – 99 per cent of the Cairn Terrier owners in the survey reported, that they were absolutely happy with their choice of breed.
I don’t remember what was the problem with the remaining 1 per cent - I believe it was barkin -, but if you should wish to know, you may later ask the members of the Danish Health Committee who are present here to day.
The Danish Cairn Group has not a specific breeding program of its own. We are following the code of ethics of the Danish Kennel Club.
There are some rules which must be followed and others which are only recommendations.
Four rules has to be followed:
1) In order to have a puppy registered in The Danish Dog Pedigree issued by the Danish Kennel Club it is necessary that both parents are registered in The Danish Dog Pedigree or an other pedigree approved by the FCI.
2) It is a necessary condition that males and females before mating is shown and judged to minimum good at an official dog show approved by the Danish Kennel Club.
3) A male may not sire more than 25% of the average annual registered number of puppies of his own breed, At this point about 135 pups in a lifetime for a stud dog.
4) A female must not give birth to more thatn 4 to 5 litters and must not be breed when she is over 8 years.
The Danish Kennel Club recommends, that the inbreed percent do not go beyond 6,5. This is not a must but only a recommendation.
Members of the Danish Cairn Group are at present working with various projects regarding the so called “ breed specific breeding strategy”. One of the issues wich is the health of our cairn terriers at present, as I already mentioned was accomplished last year, and we hope to have means to be able to run a new survey in 2012.
Additional to these more serious activities, the cairn group members are arranging meetings on various subjects of interest to cairn terrier owners, shows as the one you saw on the film and every year we are issuing The Danish Cairn Terrier Year Book, with photos of Cairn Terriers winning at shows in the corresponding year as well as useful information for cairn owners.
The Cairn Group has its own website www.cairn-terrier.dk.
Well - This was just a short information on the Danish Cairn Group and the Danish Cairn Terriers
It has been wonderful to meet you all - so many cairn friends, but unfortunately I have to leave shortly after the presentations here to day, and if you should have any questions regarding the cairns in Denmark, I will leave you to Berit Rosenfeldt who is present here to day. I know that Berit will be prepared to answer to whatever you would like to know.
In Denmark we are quite many coming to show their dogs at shows, and although we are competitors we are also good friends, and we always have a good time and a lot of fun when we meet.
The Danish Cairn group has applied by The Danish Kennel Club for a special Cairn Show in connection with the World Dog Show in Denmark in 2010, and I hope we will all meet again at the World Dog Show in Denmark.
Thank you very much for your attention.

The World Cairn Championship Show
Dagen før Symposiet, afholdt den svenske cairn klub en stor certifikatudstilling under navnet The World Cairn Championship Show.
